History & Timeline

From humble beginnings to a growing learning community, our history reflects God’s faithfulness, strong partnerships, and a clear commitment to Christ centred education that has shaped generations of students in the Hunter Region.

Creating future leaders since 1981

Hunter Christian School began with a simple but powerful vision: to provide Christ-centred education where faith and learning are deeply connected. What started as a small ministry of Mayfield Baptist Church has grown into a thriving Prep to Year 12 community, shaping generations of students with purpose, character, and a strong Biblical foundation.

Our Story

In February 1981, a group of committed families from Mayfield Baptist Church, opened the school—then known as Mayfield Christian Community School. With just 11 students, two classrooms, and founding teacher Mr Bruce Werry, the school was established to meet a growing need for Christian education in the Hunter region.

From the beginning, the school fostered a strong sense of community. Families, staff, and church members worked together to create an environment where students could grow academically and spiritually. Even in its earliest days, students participated in camps, sports carnivals, and fundraising initiatives supporting organisations such as World Vision.

As enrolments grew quickly, so did the vision.

A Growing Community

The early years were marked by humble beginnings—students walking to Mayfield Oval for sport, classes held in church buildings and even private homes, and a library built from donated books. These experiences helped shape a culture of resilience, generosity, and deep community connection that continues today.
Over time, the school has grown into a fully established Prep to Year 12 learning community, supporting students through every stage of their educational journey.

A Heart for Service

Service has become a defining part of the Hunter Christian School experience. For more than two decades, students have participated in mission opportunities across Australia and internationally.

From regional outreach in Bourke and Dubbo to long-standing partnerships in Fiji, students have engaged in meaningful service, developing compassion, humility, and a global perspective grounded in faith.
